America's Money

March 23rd, 2008 at 06:56 am

I used to think I was the only one playing grown-up and that everybody else who looked the part really did have the part.

After reading these articles

I realize more people are precariously living on the edge than I had originally thought. This certainly doesn't make me feel any better.

Gas prices are SO horrible, I'm mapping out a bus route to work just to see if it's worth switching.

Edit: I might try the bus thing once or twice just for the heck of it, but it just doesn't sound like a great idea at this point, I'd be getting home pretty late plus when I think of emergencies that could come up, it doesn't sound worth it.

There are definately a ton of people living on the edge that if you were to sneeze they would fall over. In the article the gentleman ran up $35K, I was listening to D. Ramsey last night and one of his caller's wife ran up $200k in cc debt that he had no clue about. She went shopping, ate out and took vacations

My attitude for the coming year is to hunker down and save as much as I can.

There is a very revealing statement in that first bio by Ron MacQuarrie.
"Then my son's house, which I co-signed for, went into foreclosure. Not really his fault"
Of course it is very much his fault. He bought a house that he couldn't afford to pay for. Who else's fault is that. Seeing as they were both mortgage bankers, you can't go blaming the lender for talking them into a loan he couldn't afford. You have to assume he knew exactly what he was getting himself into.

Kevin Klas's testimonial--I believe it was about 6th or 7th on the site--is much more on the SA side of the fence. It's refreshing they included at least one person who's taking responsibility for his own situation. I mean, I feel everyone's pain, but there's SO much whining in the news; they don't ever show people just buckling down and dealing with the recession calmly and without anger.
