Grocery Savings Tip

October 9th, 2008 at 01:04 am

I got this from a mommy site I frequently read. I'm just copying and pasting. Seemed like a great tip so i'm just passing it along.

"Another grocery $$ saving tip...
Buy a box of powdered milk to use in recipes that call for milk. I know powdered milk is not the most appetizing product, but when it's in a recipe, you really can't tell a difference, it's MUCH cheaper than outright buying milk and it will last forever.

This way, your "good" (and oh-so-expensive) milk is saved for drinking, cereal, etc."

How much does it cost you to mix up a gallon? I do not find powdered milk to be inexpensive anymore. It costs $3.50 to make one gallon, and I think that is comparable to the price of 2% milk. I grew up with powdered milk; In my adult life I used to buy it for the savings and convenience; I used to drink it and cook with it; I used to make mixes that included it (such as waffle & pancake mix). But now it is not a bargain, so I do not buy it.

I stand corrected. Smile I've never actually bought powdered milk, but I always imagined it was much cheaper. I guess the longer shelf life adds to the value also.

We used powdered milk when I was a kid, and I think back then it DID lead to savings... but current prices may make that a moot point. I agree that it isn't bad in recipes at all, but gross to drink! I'd still rather have some insurance that I'm cooking with the real stuff, though... I think because of my childhood experiences with it!
